Higher education institutions are ranked each year by a variety of organisations. These rankings, which are based on a number of factors, are compiled for prospective students to help them make decisions on where they want to study.
Rankings are a good place to start your research, but they won’t tell you everything you need to know which university is right for you. It’s helpful to understand what different rankings are based on, as this can help inform your decision.

What is the difference between these four rankings?
Firstly, different assessment indicators used. For example, the QS ranking focuses on academic reputation, employer reputation and the citations per faculty. The Thames ranking more attention to the output and impact of academic reputation. The ARWU ranking is mainly assessed on the influnce of academic, and the US.News World University Ranking is considering such as academic reputation, teaching quality and scientific research achievements.
In the 4 rankings, QS ranking has a special feature of focusing on employment outcomes and sustainability. What employers say about graduates from a particular university can be an important reference for students who want to get a better job by studying abroad, and HR also prefers to look at the QS rankings to screen CVs for institutional background.
Some companies can also get some reference information about recruiters based on this ranking when they are hiring employees. However, for those who want to devote themselves to academic research, it is difficult to get effective information from this table, because it is mixed with too many subjective and commercialised indicators.
Secondly, there are different data sources and survey methods. the QS ranking relies mainly on questionnaires from academics and employers, the Thames ranking relies mainly on databases of academic papers and assessments by academic experts, the ARWU ranking relies mainly on citation data of academic papers and academic questionnaires, and the US.News World University Ranking relies mainly on questionnaires on academic reputation and teaching quality.
Next, Their coverage areas also vary. the QS Ranking and the Times Ranking cover a larger number of universities worldwide. the ARWU, more focuses on global research universities, while the US.News World University Rankings focuses on US universities.
Finally, the results of the four rankings may differ due to different evaluation indicators and methods. Different rankings also have different impacts on academics, university institutions or employers. For example, it has been pointed out that the ARWU ranking is overly biased in favour of science and technology fields and adopts too many well-known US journals and publication platforms as data benchmarks, which has a certain degree of data bias.
Therefore, when choosing a university, you should still consider a number of factors and make a choice based on your personal needs and interests.
